The Activity Room Program

Purpose:

This program consists of six one-hour sessions (delivered one/week) of parent and child activities based on the Comfort, Play and Teach™ framework developed by Invest in Kids.  The program provides parents with an opportunity to learn about and support their child’s development.  In a group setting, parents discover ways to comfort, play with and teach their toddler through participating in engaging, fun and interactive activities with their children, thereby further enhancing their child’s development and building on the parent-child relationship.

Audience:

This program is designed for parents and their children, 18-36 months of age.

Program Features:

Because Comfort, Play and Teach™ is grounded in the latest research on child development, this program provides a rich learning experience for parents and children that has the following features:

  • An introduction to Comfort, Play & Teach for parents that provides an understanding of the framework and how to apply it in the interactions they have with their child daily.
  • Theme-based sessions that include developmentally-appropriate, engaging activities for parents and children.
  • A description of the developmental benefits for the child.
  • A description of the Comfort, Play &Teach opportunities for each interactive activity.
  • Weekly session guides for parents that include an overview of the weekly theme, songs and activities for the session, suggested activities to try at home, and a weekly Comfort, Play and Teach™ checklist based on everyday activities.
  • A training DVD for facilitators that provides an overview to Comfort, Play & Teach, as well as how to deliver the program to parents and their children.

  • To increase parents’ knowledge of child development.
  • To provide parents with information and strategies on using comfort, play and teach in home and community environments.
  • To increase parents’ confidence in supporting their child’s development.
  • To provide parents and children an opportunity to connect with other families in a community-based, group setting.
  • To provide communities with a program to engage families that is grounded in current research in child development.

Time 2 Play - Play Group for Families for School Aged Special Needs Children

September 27: Drop In Play at Beausejour Early Years Gym

October 4: Field Trip SWIMMING IN STEINBACH.  Meet at BEYS, transportation can be provided

October 18: Drop In Play at BEYS Gym

November 1: Field Trip: Matinee Movie in Winnipeg.  Meet at BEYS, transportation can be provided

November 15: Drop In Play at BEYS Gym

November 29: Drop In Play at BEYS Gym

December 13: Field Trip: Lunch and Play at McDonalds & Pictures with Santa at Kildonan Place.  Meet at BEYS, transportation can be provided

The Sensory Room equipment is tailored towards children with special needs - both physical and cognitive delays.  This time and place can give them the opportunity to play safely with their siblings or other community children.  Parents are invited to stay to play with their children, share the company of other parents with special needs children and relax in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding.

The kids can play in a safe and stimulating environment, parents can connect for a coffee and conversation and stories of success can be shared.

Children must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent or responsible adult careprovider.

Transportation is covered by program funding; Field Trip Costs are the responsibility of individual families.

Preschool Play Pals

Play Pals is a drop in play group open to all parents, grandparents and other care-providers of children. 

Each week is a different themed event with activities, crafts, music and a snack.  No registration is required.  Program is free though a suggested donation of $2 per family/session is appreciated to help offset the costs of supplies and space.
