Nobody’s Perfect

nobodys_perfect.gifNOBODY’S PERFECT is a parenting education and support program for parents of children from birth to age five. It is designed to meet the needs of parents who are young, single, socially or geographically isolated or who have low income or limited formal education. Participation is voluntary and free of charge.

The program is not intended for families in crisis.

This NOBODY’S PERFECT Program was developed by Health Canada in partnership with the Departments of Health of the four Atlantic provinces: New Brunswick; Newfoundland and Labrador; Nova Scotia; and Prince Edward Island. NOBODY’S PERFECT was introduced nationally in 1987.

NOBODY’S PERFECT parent materials were extensively revised and updated in 1997 and are published in both French and English. Alternative formats are available on request in both official languages.

“NOBODY’S PERFECT accepted me as who I am and helped me learn who I can be.” Parent

How does NOBODY’S PERFECT work?
NOBODY’S PERFECT is actually offered as a series of six to eight weekly group sessions. The program is built around five colourful, easy-to-read books which are given to the parents free of charge. During the meetings, trained facilitators support participants as they work together to discover positive ways of parenting.

The NOBODY’S PERFECT Program is based on the principles of adult education - it builds on what parents already know and do for themselves and their children. It starts with the parents’ personal experiences and interests and actively involves participants in the learning process. It builds networks among parents and encourages them to see one another as sources of advice and support.

“I would recommend it to friends - a way to make new friends and find mutual support.” Parent

“I like the parent books because they are easy to understand and I can keep them.” Parent

Is NOBODY’S PERFECT effective?

Yes, it is. Several major evaluation and impact studies have found NOBODY’S PERFECT to be successful at reducing isolation and increasing parenting skills and confidence.

NOBODY’S PERFECT has proven to be an effective program for parents who have limited access to sources of help or information. The program is offered in a broad range of settings in every Canadian province and territory. NOBODY’S PERFECT is liked and used by many parents, including immigrant and Aboriginal parents.

Wanda Zieske, our Early Years Community Liaison, is trained to facilitate Nobody’s Perfect to any community members that feel they would like this support.  For more information please call Wanda at 268-2506

Invest in Kids

invest-inkids.jpgInvest in Kids is a national, charitable organization dedicated to ensuring the healthy social, emotional and intellectual development of children from birth to age five by strengthening the parenting knowledge, skills and confidence of all those who touch the lives of Canada’s youngest children.

We translate the science of parenting and child development into engaging, easy to understand, relevant resources for parents and professionals.
Why 0-5?
The first five years of life are truly the miracle years – the time of greatest human development and the time when we as adults have the most profound influence on a child’s future well being.

These years are pivotal in the development of a child’s ability to learn and to create, to communicate, to trust and to love and to develop positive self-esteem.

A child’s experiences in these years – good or bad – lay the foundation for all that comes later. How we care for our children in these years has a lasting impact on who they will be as adults.

The years before five last the rest of their lives™.
What is the Need?
Most children enjoy emotional, social and intellectual health. However, Canada’s National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth found nearly 30% of children aged 0-6 have an identifiable social, emotional or learning problem which can significantly impact their future well-being. These children can be found across our society from top to bottom and many of their problems are related to a lack of positive parenting.

Invest in Kids’ National Survey of Parents of Young Children found that while 92% of parents believe being a good parent is the most important thing they can do, most have limited knowledge about how children grow and develop, they are anxious, concerned and not confident of their parenting skills and they don’t feel supported in their role as parents. These findings are evident across all parents, regardless of age, income, education, marital status, gender or working status.
